Mrs. M. is a 53 year old female living with a disability on a fixed income of Social Security Disability. She cannot work due to her disability. She came to Catholic Charities of West Virginia in need of firewood fuel assistance to maintain heat in her home. Catholic Charities partnered with Eastern West Virginia Community Action, The Salvation Army and Helping Hands, along with Mrs. M's contribution, to pay Mountaineer Gas for the back bill she owed. Mrs. M. was able to keep her home warm during the cold months of winter and she was also educated about ways to reduce her electric energy consumption, allowing her to spread more of her budget toward fire wood.

STORY COURTESY OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF WEST VIRGINIA

Brandon attended Energy Express this past summer at Romney Elementary School. He was very good at science and math which were his best and favorite subjects, but he had a few issues with reading fluently when asked to read aloud. He loves to be read to and enjoys arts and crafts. Brandon stated that the arts and crafts based on the books they are reading are his favorite part of the morning program at Energy Express. He also likes the family style meals and spending time with his mentor. He stated that doing skits for the open house or to perform for the parents was a lot of fun and he likes creating the props and costumes. Brandon loves his Energy Express Mentors and also thinks the site supervisor Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Kacapardo are terrific. Mrs. K. is his science enrichment teacher this year. He is always excited by getting up to go to Energy Express and loves the whole experience, he looks forward to the possibility of going again this year.

Because United Way of Hampshire County funded Energy Express in part, Brandon is enjoying his newfound confidence in reading and reads to his younger sister Courtney who is 6 years old! Both children attended Energy Express and both have maintained good grades in their Language Arts classes this year. Reading together has given these siblings a common ground and a team building exercise to help both in their reading skills!
